Backer Alpha Patch #9 - Hotkeys, Unit Shortcuts, Control Groups

Greetings Commander,

Hope you had a great New Year!

The latest patch has been released: Alpha v0.0.9

Customizable Hotkeys

You can now remap hotkeys for most major actions in the game. Check out the full list of hotkeys in the Settings menu. This may not be fully comprehensive yet, but I think we got most of them. If you have more suggestions for hotkey functionality, please don't hesitate to make a post in the #Suggestions channel.

Control Groups

Managing your crew just got easier with the introduction of control groups. Assign individual or custom groups of units to shortcut keys for quick access:

  • Hover over a unit’s portrait in the portrait bar and press one of the twelve "crew management" keys.
  • A tooltip will appear at the bottom of the crew tooltip, confirming the assigned shortcut.
  • Crew management keys are assigned to the number row by default (1, 2, 3...0 plus the "-" and "=" keys), Like all hotkeys, you can remap these in the Settings menu to suit your needs.

We are currently working on adding ability support to the crew management keys, allowing you to map unit abilities and consumables to directly to hotkeys. For example: you could map the "1" key to Purify or the "4" key to Ancient Translocator. Expect this feature to release with the next patch.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on these new features:

  • Are there additional shortcut functionalities you'd like to see?
  • Do you have suggestions for better default mappings?

Please feel free to share your ideas in the #Suggestions channel. If you encounter any bugs or rough edges, please report them in the #BugReporting channel. Your reports have been absolutely vital in helping us improve the game and make it the best experience it can be. As always, thanks for your support, and thanks for playing!

How to Install the Patch (Manual Installation)

If you have already bought the game, you can install the latest patch by following these instructions:

  • At the top right corner of the Itch page, next to your username, click the "down" arrow to open the dropdown menu, then click "My Library".
  • Find Void War in your library and click the "Download" button.
  • That's it! You now have the latest version of the game. Your save data will carry through automatically.* You can delete the old version of the game whenever you want**.

*For those curious, your save data is not stored with the main game files and is actually located here: C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Void_War

**NOTEInstalling a new patch WILL break your last autosave, so make sure to finish your last run before installing.

How to Install the Patch via Itch.io App (Experimental)

If you want to stay up to date with the latest version without having to manually install new patches every time we release them, you can do so by installing the Itch.io app launcher.  Once installed, download Void War and you should be good to go.

Note that your previously existing profile data will still be stored at the usual location: C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Void_War

Any existing profile data from the manually installed patches should carry over to the Itch.io app version without issue.

One last important detail: automatic patches will still break previously existing runs, and as far as we can tell, there is no way to disable automatic updates in the Itch.io app. If an auto-update has broken your previous run and you'd like to continue playing it, in the Itch app, go to Library > right-click Void War >  Manage > Manage button > Switch to another version... > then select the last version of the game.  This version should be compatible with your last autosave if it was recently broken by an auto update.

Can you add pressing space or a hotkey for confirming your options when a dialog box appears, you would probably need to add a way to tab though the options with arrow keys or wasd

but I was specifically thinking of when there is only one option, such as all crew is dead on the opposing ship
It gets a little annoying when I have gone from hovering over recall crew to having to press the confirmation then back to recall crew after the hundredth time

Have you tried using the number keys to select dialog options? That might be the solution you're looking for. When there is only one option you can just hit '1' to advance the dialog.

That sounds like it will be perfect
I only wanted space because I am constantly pausing and unpausing so I'm always ready to press it

Thanks
